IoT Protocol Selection: MQTT vs. AMQP vs. CoAP for Industrial Applications
Why Protocol Selection Matters
Choosing the wrong messaging protocol for an IoT deployment is a common and expensive mistake. The protocol determines your latency floor, bandwidth usage, infrastructure requirements, and long-term scalability ceiling.
MQTT: The Industrial Standard
MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a publish-subscribe protocol designed for constrained devices and low-bandwidth networks. It runs over TCP with a lightweight 2-byte fixed header.
Key characteristics:
- Extremely lightweight — ideal for microcontrollers with 64KB RAM
- Three QoS levels: fire-and-forget, at-least-once, exactly-once
- Persistent sessions survive network disconnects
- Widely supported by cloud brokers: AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, Mosquitto
Use MQTT when: You have battery-powered or resource-constrained devices, unreliable network conditions, or need simple telemetry from thousands of endpoints.
AMQP: Enterprise Message Bus
AMQP (Advanced Message Queuing Protocol) is a more complex, feature-rich protocol with sophisticated routing, exchange types, and binding rules. It's the protocol behind RabbitMQ.
Key characteristics:
- Rich message routing: direct, topic, fanout, headers exchanges
- Transactional messaging with acknowledgement workflows
- Better suited for server-to-server communication than device-to-cloud
- Higher overhead — not suitable for microcontrollers
Use AMQP when: You need complex message routing between backend services, guaranteed delivery with transaction semantics, or enterprise system integration.
CoAP: For Ultra-Constrained Devices
CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) is designed for devices with extreme resource constraints — 8-bit microcontrollers, very low memory. It runs over UDP, not TCP.
Key characteristics:
- Binary protocol over UDP — minimum overhead
- RESTful model (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE)
- Optional reliability via confirmable messages
- Designed for 6LoWPAN / mesh networks (Zigbee, Thread)
Use CoAP when: You're deploying on 8-bit MCUs, mesh sensor networks, or battery-powered nodes where TCP overhead is prohibitive.
